The Mid-America Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) Certification Program is designed for GSI maintenance professionals, defined as a person or company that maintains green stormwater infrastructure as part of construction projects and in retrofit projects to reduce stormwater runoff. The purpose of the certification program is to verify the skills and knowledge of GSI maintenance professionals who will be hired to maintain these facilities, and to increase the long-term success of stormwater management in the Kansas City region.
Benefits of becoming Mid-America GSI Maintenance certified include:
How the Field Certification works:
The fall in-person training builds on the Mid-America GSI On-Demand Certification and emphasizes how seasonal conditions influence the maintenance and performance of GSI systems. Participants develop hands-on skills on interpreting site conditions, prioritizing maintenance actions and practicing using the appropriate tools and techniques that support long-term system function as sites transition into winter. These skills establish the foundation for a spring session that focuses more on plant identification, lifecycle interpretation and weed management, rather than long-term GSI performance and system maintenance.
Successful completion of the Mid-America GSI On-Demand Certification is required prior to attending the Field Certification. Participants must complete both the Spring and Fall Field Certifications to receive a Mid-America GSI Field Maintenance certificate, although the two sessions may be taken in any order. Certified individuals will receive verification of certification and an electronic certificate within five business days of completion. To maintain the Mid-America GSI Maintenance certification, all certified individuals are required to recertify every three years by retaking the certification training.
