Kim Riepl, Bismarck-Mandan Metropolitan Planning Organization Andrew Stromme, City of Mandan The Safe Routes to Services project in Bismarck and Mandan has focused on improving equitable access to essential services such as healthcare, housing, grocery stores and other human services. Through collaboration with community-based organizations, the project has identified key barriers that prevented residents—particularly vulnerable populations like low-income households, seniors, and people with disabilities—from safely walking, biking or using transit to these services. Working together with the Bismarck-Mandan MPO, City of Bismarck, City of Mandan, Burleigh County, Morton County, and NDDOT staff, infrastructure improvements such as filling in sidewalk gaps, enhancing crosswalks, and creating or enhancing bike facilities were reviewed as implementation strategies to address these challenges. By prioritizing accessibility and safety, the project worked to ensure that all residents, regardless of their circumstances, have reliable and equitable access to the services they depend on daily.
