AWR136 is an eight-hour, non-technical introduction to cybersecurity designed to empower individuals and organizations with the awareness and practical skills needed to combat today’s cyber threats. Whether at work or at home, participants will learn how everyday actions can strengthen cybersecurity and prevent disruptions to business, government, and emergency response operations. This course goes beyond theory—delivering hands-on techniques that provide immediate personal value and foster a lasting culture of cyber hygiene and resilience across your organization.

Topics include:

  • Analyze the importance of the human layer in defense against cyber-attacks.
  • Assess how cybersecurity threats can impact individuals and their organizations.
  • Implement cyber hygiene practices to improve cybersecurity.

Prerequisites: There are no course prerequisites for this course.

FEMA / SID Number. Students must have a FEMA Student Identification Number (SID) to attend class. You can look up your FEMA SID, or register for a new one, at the following site: https://cdp.dhs.gov/femasid.

Please note that all non-U.S. citizens who wish to attend must be pre-approved by DHS before the start of class. Individuals will need to bring their photo ID to attend the course.

Target Audience: State, local, tribal, and territorial personnel with no more than a basic understanding of cybersecurity who use computers and other internet-connected devices in public or private organizations. This includes representatives from:

  • Schools/Universities 
  • Communication Sector 
  • Transportation Sector 
  • Energy Sector 
  • Defense/Industrial Base Sector 
  • Elected and Appointed Officials

  • Emergency Services Sector

Please be advised registration is reserved for emergency services personnel in the nine-county Kansas City metropolitan area: Cass, Clay, Jackson, Platte and Ray counties in Missouri and Leavenworth, Johnson, Miami and Wyandotte counties in Kansas. Travel costs are not provided.
