Universal Design is the design of products and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for specialized design (RL Mace Universal Design Institute). For residential development, universal design can better equip older adults and people with disabilities to live safely in their homes. Core elements of universal design for residential development include no-step entries, open layouts and flexible bathroom and kitchen designs in a highly marketable package.
Residential universal design strategies have primarily been applied to single-family development; however, there are substantial opportunities for universal design in multi-family projects, which is a preferred option for many households.

Richard Duncan, MRPExecutive Director, The RL Mace Universal Design InstituteDuncan has spent over 35 years in the field of architectural and product accessibility, and universal design in residential, public and transportation environments. He has extensive experience in the design, costs, materials and products in residential and non-residential settings. His work includes the issues of affordable housing, home and repair financing, and transportation accessibility, as well as community design for constituencies that include people with disabilities and older households.
Jennifer Jones-LacyAssistant City Administrator/Director of Finance, Roeland Park, KansasJones-Lacy is a seasoned local government professional with more than 18 years of experience in administration, finance, budgeting, neighborhood services, planning and zoning, and economic development. In Roeland Park, she has played a pivotal role in crafting universal design incentive guidelines and leading the city to become a Gold-level Community for All Ages recognition city, promoting accessibility, inclusion and aging in place.
